What was the 1860 Manifesto?

The 1860 Manifesto was written by Brahms, Joachim, and a number of other musicians, and was an attack on the “New German School” composers (mainly Franz Liszt and Rochard Wagner). A central point of disagreement between these two groups of musicians was between traditional and new musical forms. Liszt and his circle favored new styles in writing and forms that would blend music with narrative and pictorial ideas. As Liszt put it, “New wine required new bottles”. Wagner sought to combine all of the arts (music, painting, poetry, etc.) into one all-encompassing art work: the Gesamtkunstwerk (“total art-work”).  The Conservative circle, including Brahms, championed the forms used by the classic masters and eschewed highly pictorial, narrative music.
