Who were some of Brahms’s contemporaries?

Brahms lived and worked at the height of the Romantic movement in the 19th century, and was familiar with many of the most important composers, especially in the German-speaking world. Examples include Schumann, Liszt, Berlioz, Wagner, Dvorak, Smetana, Saint-Saêns, Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss, Debussy, Rimsky-Korsakov, etc. etc. The list goes on quite a ways! After the death of Robert Schumann in 1856, Brahms was considered to be the greatest living German composer (perhaps tied for first place with Wagner…)
