What was Brahms’s main instrument and who was his main teacher?

The piano, of course! Brahms studied with Eduard Marxsen.  Marxsen studied in Vienna and made his debut in Hamburg with a concert of his own music. Marxsen was Brahms’s entrée into the Jewish, liberal, intellectual world. He found Brahms’s technical precocity astonishing: “One day I gave him a composition of Weber’s…at the following lesson he played it to me so blamelessly and so exactly as I wished that I praised him. ‘I have also practiced it another way’, he said, and played me the right-hand part with his left hand.”
