Johannes Brahms
3. What was Brahms’s father’s occupation?
Johann Jakob Brahms (1806-1872) was a musician who pursued his career against his family’s will. He arrived in Hamburg in 1826 and made a living playing ‘gigs’ as string and wind player. He played horn in the Hamburg militia and string bass in the Hamburg Philharmonic. He was well-known for his repartees to conductors. After being told by the conductor that he was playing too loudly, he shot back, “Herr Kapellmeister, it’s my double bass and I’ll play it as loud as I like”. Johann Jakob was exceedingly proud of his son’s musical success.
