Igor Stravinsky
4.
Since Stravinsky went through three different stylistic periods, there are a number of composers he was influenced by. From a very early age he idolized Tchaikovsky, who died when Stravinsky was only 11 years old. Stravinsky’s main composition teacher was none other than Rimsky-Korsakov, who influenced the music of Stravinsky greatly. From brilliant orchestral colors and technique to the use of octatonic scales and exotic harmonies, Stravinsky owed Rimsky-Korsakov a great deal.
The music of Claude Debussy also had a profound influence on the early music of Stravinsky. Perhaps the most startling influence was that of Arnold Schoenberg and his adoption of serial technique and 12-tone music. After the death of Schoenberg in 1951, Stravinsky began to compose in a serial style until his death in 1971.
