Who was Sergei Diaghilev and why was he important?
Sergei Diaghilev was a Russian impresario and the founder of the Ballets Russes (1909). He revitalized ballet by integrating the ideals of other art forms—music, painting, and drama—with those of the dance. The Ballets Russes was wildly successful after Diaghilev commissioned the three early Stravinsky ballets The Firebird (1910), Petrouchka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913), which revolutionized contemporary music in the second decade of the 20th century. Diaghilev commissioned ballets by some of the most important composers of the 20th Century:
Stravinsky
Prokofiev
Richard Strauss
Debussy
Ravel
Respighi
Poulenc
De Falla
Satie
Seasons of the Diaghilev Ballets Russes were given uninterruptedly from 1909 to 1929.
