Mussorgsky and the Mighty Handful

Mussorgsky began piano lessons at the age of six from his mother, who was herself a trained pianist. He composed his first piano work at the age of twelve, which was published at his father’s expense. As with the other members of “The Mighty Handful”, Mussorgsky did not pursue music as a career. His Pictures at an Exhibition is considered to be one of the most difficult piano works in the entire piano literature.
