Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857) is considered to be the father of Russian music. Glinka was the first Russian composer to gain wide recognition within his own country and his compositions were an important influence on Russian composers, notably the “Mighty Handful.” In the composer’s own words, following his three years of study in Italy: “I could not sincerely be Italian. A longing for my own country led me gradually to the idea of writing in a a Russian manner.”
