9. Why did Bartók move to America in 1940?
Bartók despised the political regime in Hungary in the 1930s, which allied itself with Nazi Germany. In his words, “In Hungary the “civilized” Christian folk are almost entirely devoted to the Nazi system. I am really ashamed that I come from this class.” He arrived in the USA in 1940 and settled in New York.
