Balakirev was the leader of the “Mighty Handful” group of composers and took a strong early interest in Tchaikovsky. He guided and critiqued Tchaikovsky’s work intensely, especially in the 1860s. Most famously, he coached Tchaikovsky through Romeo and Juliet, suggesting structure, keys, and dramatic pacing almost line-by-line. In short: Balakirev helped Tchaikovsky write one of his first masterpieces.
