Richard Strauss

7. What was Strauss’s relationship with the Nazis?

This is a difficult question to answer, because there are different views on it by different biographers. By the time the Nazis took power, Strauss was about to turn 70 years old. Most accounts relate that he cooperated with the Nazis to protect his daughter-in-law, who was Jewish, and his grandchildren. Strauss had no love for the Nazis, writing: “I consider the Streicher-Goebbels Jew-baiting as a disgrace to German honour, as evidence of incompetence — the basest weapon of untalented, lazy mediocrity against a higher intelligence and greater talent”. Still, he cooperated with the government and held a position of influence during the Third Reich.
