Jean Sibelius
Quiz Yourself About the Life and Music of
Jean Sibelius
12.
Why did Sibelius stop composing after 1926? (He lived until 1957)
One theory is that Sibelius could not bring himself to compose in a 20th Century style, such as that of Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Bartok, and others who were pushing the limits of tonal music to their extremes (and beyond!). By the mid 1920s the musical world had changed so dramatically that he simply could not adjust. He was a composer who had one foot in the 19th Century and part of one foot in the beginning of the 20th Century. Since he lived longer than virtually ALL of the great composers in the history of music, he lived through a wild variety of musical revolutions and changes. He composed virtually nothing and had no new works published for his last 31 years.
