Alexander Glazunov
(1865 - 1936)

Symphony no. 3 in D Major   (1890)

Glazunov=brilliant woodwind writing

This is one of my particular favorites of this composer.  Glazunov was an exceedingly brilliant composer for woodwinds (we can see this in his Violin Concerto), and was also well known for his extremely effective Scherzo movements (which are extraordinarily difficult to perform).  Here is the Scherzo movement from his Symphony no. 3, a tour-de-force of orchestral writing, which features highly effective wind writing throughout. Glazunov owed a great debt to Tchaikovsky when it came to woodwind writing!
