Who was Sergei Diaghilev?

Sergei Diaghilev was the founder and impresario of the famous Ballets Russes, a company based in Paris that performed between 1909 and 1929 throughout Europe and on tours to North and South America. Diaghilev commissioned works from many of the greatest composers living at the time, including Stravinsky (Firebird, Petrouchka, and the Rite of Spring), Prokofiev, Richard Strauss, Debussy, Ravel, de Falla, Satie, and many others. Ravel composed Daphnis et Chloé for Diaghilev and the work was first performed in 1912 in Paris.
