Maurice Ravel
Debussy won, Ravel didn’t……

Did Ravel win the coveted Prix de Rome?
No! Ravel tried a total of five times to win the prize, and the last failed attempt in 1905 was so controversial that it led to a reorganization of the administration at the Paris Conservatory. Famous French composers who DID win include Berlioz (1803), Gounod (1839), Bizet (1857), Massenet (1863), and Debussy (1884).
