The most advanced work of Strauss is his opera Elektra, composed in 1908. If you think Salome is scary, I suggest watching this opera! Here is the final minute of the opera, which has one of the most powerful and darkest endings of any opera I know. After this opera was completed, Strauss retreated into the sunny world of Der Rosenkavalier, and never returned to the Expressionist and nightmarish worlds of Salome and Elektra again.
